Killer Reserved Nine Seats, The / L'assassino ha riservato nove poltrone (1974)

2.5 out of 5

As a lesser and formulaic talkie Agatha Christie style giallo The Killer Reserves Nine Seats puts a group of friends and family who bicker a lot in peril by trapping them in a theatre on the very day that once every hundred years is marked with the activation of a family curse that has befell the Davenant family. There are Davenants present on this day so lots of people die.

There is a hint of the supernatural in the story but still there is a killer who appears to wear a ginger Hugh Griffith Thunderbirds fright mask.

The kills are imaginative and the bickering can be unpicked for various motives and red herrings but the film is what it is and it is a lesser giallo and the film feels like a stage play presented on film although criticisms of The Killer Reserves Nine Seats should not be overstated as it passes the time and is certainly not the worst film ever made. It is also sexed up with the occasional female breast flopping out every ten minutes or so.

Romanian actor Chris Avram stars and Lucretia Love puts in an appearance. This is mostly one for the collectors.
