So Sweet, So Dead / Rivelazioni di un maniaco sessuale al capo della squadra mobile (1972)

4.0 out of 5

The criticisms leveled at So Sweet, So Dead are valid and should be addressed. The film is misogynistic without doubt and there is a certain level of needless moralizing. In the grand scheme of this exploitation gem these are minor issues and no more detract from the experience than similar themes manage to ruin the goat shagging Island Of Death.

Having dealt with the definite issues with the movie it has to be said that overall, minor quibbles aside So Sweet, So Dead is a sublime film, a giallo that while using a very familiar blade and fedora motif has a number of great ideas both stylistic and thematic. For all the moral tone of the film there is distinct amorality to the finale and this in itself is delicious. An early in the feature daylight beach stalk and slash shot in slow motion is incredible and should be ranked with the finest of grindhouse moments.

As was the case for much of his career talented supporting character actor Luciano Rossi is woefully underused and Farley Granger stars.

Apparently re-cut as a porn film entitled Penetration and featuring a delightful Euro vibe score from Giorgio Gaslini whose credits include Deep Red and the wonderful La sorelle this is truly excellent stuff.
