Demons 2 / Dèmoni 2: L'incubo ritorna (1986)

3.0 out of 5

The inhabitants of a high-rise apartment building are besieged by bloodthirsty demons in Lamberto Bava’s inferior but unfairly maligned sequel to Demons. A television program documenting the events of the first film airs, causing a demon to emerge from the TV set. Unhappy birthday girl Sally, Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni, is infected and transforms into a demon. She soon spreads her contagion to others, who become demons and terrorize the remaining survivors.

Much of Demons is recycled, including the film-within-a-film concept, graphic transformation scenes, and darkened interiors filled with bluish light. Several cast and crew members return, including the special effects artists and writing team.

Bobby Rhodes is memorable as fearless gym instructor Hank, while Tassoni seems to genuinely have fun as the demonic Sally. The 80’s alternative/goth soundtrack is complemented by Simon Boswell’s distinctly eerie electronic score.

Demons 2 lacks the intensity and style of Demons, and is plagued by bad dubbing, plot holes, and a few unconvincing effects. However, its high-energy and fast-paced gory action make it enjoyable in its own right. Notable scenes include a parking garage fight between bodybuilders and demons, and a pregnant woman terrorized by a demon child.
