Fishmen and Their Queen, The / La regina degli uomini pesce (1995)

2.5 out of 5

Since the opening third of this movie recycles footage from Sergio Martino's post nucleur favourite The Fishmen and Their Queen could arguably be as much of a spin off of 2019: After the Fall of New York as it is a sequel to a certain piscine monster movie.

Set in the future the film is clearly aimed at the youth and teen market as this enjoyable hokum plays to an audience that would enjoy titles such as Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Time Bandits or The Goonies.

In essence this is a fantasy fairytale complete with an evil and scheming queen who in a clear reference to Snow White dispenses potion laden shiny red apples and turns those who displease her into frogs. The film may have come as a little bit of a disappointment to those seeking a continuation of Island of the Fishmen or indeed 2019: After the Fall of New York as this is a film prepared to chart it's own family friendly course. Accepted for what it is and not what it could or should have been and the viewer will be treated to an enjoyable yarn with an appeal to all ages.
