Space has seldom looked as garish as it does in Starcrash and it comes to the accompaniment of a score provided by the award winning John Barry in an almost, but not quite, rip off of the music from Star Wars.
As clunky as the whole affair is Starcrash does a pretty good job on the space ships but a lazer battle is a little bit of a manic affair and it is a bit difficult to work out just who is shooting who. There is some stop motion work too, but this a little bit wobbly and awkard.
Cult favourite Robert Tessier plays to type as a villain and David Hasselhoff and Christopher Plummer also star but the real draw is for fans of Caroline Munro in tight leather underwear and Zardoz style thigh high boots. Unintentionally funny and not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination Starcrash nevertheless has to be seen to be believed and would likely appeal to those who really enjoyed the 1980 version of Flash Gordon.

This one is painful and you gave it an appropriate score. Even the comedy value of The Hoff runs thin quickly.
ReplyDeleteSince I adored the 1980 Flash Gordon I'll definitely be buying this one.
ReplyDeleteFLASH GORDON far exceeds this one, but I do enjoy the goofy and childish charm of Cozzi's picture. Without Caroline Munro, this would just be STAR TRASH.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Geof, watching this movie is a painful experience. Caroline Munro does look amazing in it though.
ReplyDeleteGot a soft spot for this - although must admit I haven't seen it for about 2 decades!
ReplyDeleteAgree with Venoms, no where near as good as Flash , it was the best point of reference I could come up with but yes there is a quality difference
