Massacre Time/ Tempo di massacro (1966)

4.5 out of 5

Despite a great pairing of Franco Nero and George Hilton it is a misfit bad guy performance by Nino Castelnuovo in this Django-like revenge western that is the real draw. His intensity is mesmerising.

The action never really relents and some heavyweight fist fighting and gunplay from Hilton is complimented with a brilliant whip fight involving Nero and Castelnuovo.

Lucio Fulci directs what is possibly his finest western, having an edge on the Jack London inspired White Fang films, and while less quirky than Four of the Apocalypse is a far more satisfying experience overall and cetainly ahead of Silver Saddle by a country mile.

While the pen of Fernando Di Leo gives the feature an occasional comic thread that runs throughout, this film is a brutal, action packed and essential Euro western and recommended to all fans of the genre.
