Warning, The / L'avvertimento (1980)

4.5 out of 5

Eurocrime familiar face Guido Leontini, who was a henchman of The Hunchback in Brothers Till We Die, is in L'avvertimento as is Arthur from The Beyond who Fulciphiles will know was played by Gianpaolo Saccarola. Martin Balsmam and Laura Trotter co-star alongside Ringo Giuliano Gemma who has the lion's share of screen time, most of the lines and is at the centre of all of the action.

Fans of Damiano Damiani directed and penned crime drama will be unsurprised to learn that The Warning deals with corruption in high office as with Confessions of a Police Captain and How to Kill a Judge. As with other the other titles that deal with these themes the film is light on action and is driven by investigative procedure and conspiracy making the film compelling yet verbose viewing but a million miles from the escapism of the more lighthearted or gritty fist, gun and car chase end of the genre.

Damiani's crime, corruption and Mafia films were of a consistently high standard and The Warning is no exception. Highly recommended.
