After Death / Oltre la morte (1989)

2.0 out of 5

After blaming researchers for the death of his daughter, a voodoo priest raises the dead and soon the island is overtaken by zombies. Years later, the daughter of two of the researchers returns to the island with a group of mercenaries. They soon find themselves besieged by zombies who leap from the bushes with ninja-like agility.

After Death, also known as Zombie 4: After Death or the confusingly titled Zombie Flesheaters 3, is Claudio Fragasso’s attempt at mixing Demons-style zombies in a Zombie Flesh Eaters setting with an added dose of jungle action adventure. Although this may sound like a winning recipe, it fails on many levels.

With an unintentionally laughable title song, horrendous acting and dialogue, and numerous plot holes, After Death is difficult to take seriously. The zombie makeup consists of either protruding fake teeth and multi-colored drool or faces completely obscured by rags. Franco di Girolamo’s realistic gore effects are the film’s only redeeming element.

In addition to starring legendary porn actor Jeff Stryker, the film is best known for zombies who can fire M-16’s accurately and one that even speaks in full sentences.
