David and Goliath / David e Golia (1960)

1.5 out of 5

The mighty Biblical tale of the legendary meeting of David and Goliath upon the field of battle.

This film however, is anything but legendary, nor is it an overly famous or accurate portrayal of one of the most enduring Biblical tales.

The spectacular screen presence of Orson Welles as King Saul can't salvage this soporific, monotonous, and inferior scripted film which has more in common with the Italian "muscle man", Peplum epics than that of a traditional Biblical film.

Although there is a stirring battle scene at the end of this languid mess which does incorporate the notorious fight between the young David, played here by Ivica Pajer, and the Philistine giant Goliath, played by circus strong man Kronos.

Stick with the Hollywood Biblical films Ben Hur, King Of Kings and The Ten Commandments. Only for the curious.
