Fourth Victim, The / La última señora Anderson (1971)

2.5 out of 5

The Fourth Victim is a giallo type thriller that is both an Italian and Spanish production yet uses an English setting that seemingly prefers the genteel idyll of chocolate-box home county locales rather than the urban realist setting of works such as Deadly Sweet.

Not always taking itself overly seriously, La última señora Anderson features interactions between a police officer, José Luis López Vázquez, and a prime suspect, Michael Craig, that at times feel like something from a Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sketch rather than from a serious thriller. If there are works similar in tone to The Fourth Victim then they would surely be, moments of comic relief aside, amongst the thrillers Umberto Lenzi was directing in the early part of the 1970s and not only because of the casting of Carroll Baker.

The score from Piero Umiliani is particularly noteworthy and location spotters may recognise Oakley Court, the castle passed some miles down the road in Rocky Horror Picture Show.
