Fatty Girl Goes to New York / Cicciabomba (1982)

1.5 out of 5

A prank from the most desired guy in school causes the overweight Miris, Italian pop star Donatella Rettore in a puffy suit, to want to attempt suicide. Miris decides against killing herself when she discovers she’s won a trip to New York. There, before even leaving the airport, she comes across a Baroness, played by Anita Ekberg, who wishes to use Miris to publicly test a new swordfish diet plan. Things get more ridiculous when, after a musical Rocky-style montage, Miris wakes up one night completely thin and in no time becomes a pop sensation, resulting in a tedious revenge scenario as she returns to Italy with her new body.

This Italian teen comedy directed by Umberto Lenzi is not as funny as it sounds and feels more like a showcase for Rettore than a Lenzi feature. What saves it from being a complete dud is a rather moving and nostalgic music video at the end filmed in a by-gone era of Times Square. Those who appreciate 80s pop sensationalism may find some enjoyment here, but otherwise, only recommended to curious Lenzi completionists.
