Achtung! The Desert Tigers / Kaput lager - gli ultimi giorni delle SS (1977)

Luigi Batzella manages the impossible here: he directs a film that makes his Beast in Heat look like a masterpiece. Achtung is a strange mix of the usual low-rent Italian war movie, with a touch of Ilsa thrown in for no apparent reason than to up the nudity a little.

Gordon Mitchell, as the cruel Commandant, will be no stranger to exploitation fans, and he is the only reason to watch this junk. Whether he's kissing a transvestite or having a glass of urine thrown into his face, he's never less than great. Rabid Dogs' Lea Lander, however, plays the Ilsa clone, who incidentally likes being whipped as much as doing the whipping, with a half-heartedness that deserves the spanking she administers to her shapely female prisoners.

Although sharing Beast's usage of scenes taken from other films, Achtung sorely misses the strange sexiness of Dr. Kratsch and sheer insanity of her hirsute sidekick. To say that a film would be improved with the addition of a fat, naked furball bouncing around in a cage is condemnation enough.
