Phenomenal and the Treasure of Tutankamen / Fenomenal e il tesoro di Tutankamen (1968)

Ruggero Deodato’s full directorial debut is one that Italian superhero fans are likely to enjoy against their better judgment. Being the main attraction, it is easy to argue that the character of Fenomenal should’ve had more screen time since the masked hero seems to fade out of the story for long periods of time. Yet, this seemed to work in the film’s favor, making for more savory fun when Deodato delivers some witty action scenes when he puts his stuntman to work, even though the all-black attire of Fenomenal is possibly one of the laziest attempts at a superhero costume.

What is unique, although quite obvious, is that Fenomenal’s identity is kept unknown, which along with numerous backstabbing characters adds a mystery element to the story that may cause some viewers to get lost.
