Awful Story of the Nun of Monza, The / La monaca di Monza (1969)

3.5 out of 5

This is not the original cinematic telling of The Nun of Monza but with cruel and unusual punishments, convent bedhopping and the occasional indulgence in the exhibition of boobage this is very much the prototype for the nunsploitation wave.

While The Awful Story of the Nun of Monza eschews the excesses in which many later genre entries would indulge this is still of interest to those who particularly enjoy the seamier side of clericalism.

Anne Heywood and Antonio Sabato star whilst Hardy Kr├╝ger plays English football commentator Adrian Chiles playing a priest and Eriprando Visconti of Oedipus orca fame directs.

Interesting locations include a Venice scene free from modern craft and a bit of stomping around a reedy swamp that is reminiscent of Violation of the Bitch. Both Flavia the Heretic and Lucio Fulci's Beatrice Cenci are in the same ballpark though the whole theological torture thingamajig is done far better in Czechoslovakia's Kladivo na carodejnice.
