Protagonists, The / I protagonisti (1968)

4.5 out of 5

While, for all intents and purposes, I protagonisti is a crime film, it is probably closer in tone to L'Avventura than to Stunt Squad. In a story that will call upon viewers to question just where it is that their sympathies lie, a bunch of decadent bohemians, led by Jean Sorel, pay to spend time in the company of Lou Castel's Sardinian fugitive while the Arma dei carabinieri close in on the bandit.

With a distinctly Italian, late-sixties, aesthetic that would appeal to those who enjoyed the likes of Interrabang, or even such diverse fare as Seven Red Berets or Top sensation, Marcello Fondato's excellent d├ębut places rifles in the hands of those who are not, under any circumstances, to be trusted. And that is not necessarily the villains!

Sylva Koscina, Pamela Tiffin, Luigi Pistilli and Giovanni Petrucci co-star.
